HORTATORY EXPOSITION

Text 1 - IELTS script illustrating the stages of a hortatory exposition

[Thesis]

Human beings endeavour for establishing colonies in the space is unrealistic and is a waste of

limited resources on the earth.

[Argument 1 + Evidence for]

It has been 30 years since the United states successfully had its man landed on the moon and

since then, countries like the US, the former Soviet Union and China have spent huge amount

of manpower and money for the exploration of the outer space, mostly for military purpose.

However the human beings have not benefited from such heavy investment. On the contrary,

lives were lost in a number of accidents, including the explosion of a US spacecraft.

[Argument 2 + Evidence for]

The increased exploration, much in the name of establishing human colonies, is more or less

the result of extensive arms race between a few powerful countries, which may accelerate the

destruction of the earth itself. With advanced technologies gained from such attempts, human

beings are in the jeopardy of a few who control the technologies.

[Argument 3 + Evidence for]

Our resources are very limited, and should be used for the benefit of the general public on the

earth, many of them still fighting for adequate food and clothing. If the amount of money used

for space development in the US are diverted to fighting against poverty, the whole Africa can

be benefited. And if the current space technologies are used for the civil purpose, the

productivity of the developing countries can be raised significantly.

[Argument 4 + Evidence for]

Increased publicity of establishing human colonies in the space will also make people less

treasure the limited resources on the earth and dream that for one day we can move to another

planet and explore the abundance of resources there. But do we have an idea even vaguely,

how long it will take us to that day? Or can we arrive at that day?

[Recommendation]

Stop space race! And use our resources for the well-being of the earth and its residents!

Jepara, April 29, 2007

The school committee of SMAN 1 Welahan Jepara.

Dear sir,

We have writing this letter to you because we are concerned about education quality of SMAN 1 Welahan.

To improve the students’ quality in language learning, we need language laboratory.

As we know, two of the subjects given on the national final examination are Bahasa Indonesia and English. Especially on English, there is listening comprehension section on the test. Students should be prepared to do listening test and one of the instruments needed is language laboratory.

Actually we have tape recorder to teach listening, but it is a matter of problem since the teacher must bring tape recorder, wire, cassette and other material from class to class. It wastes of energy and time. Teachers are busy on preparing instruments. If we have language laboratory, teacher can prepare the material of lesson without disturbing preparing the instruments.

Furthermore, language laboratory is not only used by English lesson, but also can be used by any language lessons. There are four language lessons in SMANELA, they are Bahasa Indonesia, English, Arabic and Bahasa Jawa. Those teachers can use language laboratory when teaching and it is very useful for students.

That's all.

how to chosse a mobile phone

when we buy a mobile phone,we have to consider some points.doing so,we have to make a wise decision.

if we decide to buy a mobile phone,we can start asking ourselves the usefulness of the equipment.we may ask,"do we want it for our prestige or for it usefulness?.we must know what we need.

after we decide to use a mobile phone,we should make a choice on the type of mobile phone.with a various choices,we should decide the one that meets our needs.

as the consequence of its high operational costs.we have to pay more for a mobile phone compared to a fixed telephone.that's it why we have to think carefully before we decide to use it.therefore,we only use the mobile phone for important talks.it will not be a wise to use it for a chat with a friend.

with all the consequences of the mobile phone,we indeed should give serious considerations before using it,they are:
1.ask yourself,do i really need at the moment??
2.buy the mobile phone, that siuts your budget.
3.prioritize the function of the mobile phone for you, rather thanto features that may interest you.
4.use the mobile phone for important talks.

We are writing to you because we are concerned about the way food is being advertised to children.

What we eat now affects our health in years to come. Bad dietary habits start while we are very young. For this reason, your government support health education that encourages a balanced healthy diet. Australians are encouraged to get the bulk of their nutrients from fresh fruits, vegetables, and wholegrain cereals, a lesser amount from foods high in fat, salt and sugar.
TV advertising to children presents a completely different message. Nearly 80% of food advertising pushes fatty snacks or sweets - the very foods that should be eaten least. To make matter worse, these ads take up much of the advertising time. This must be stopped.
TV advertising is powerful and influential. Parents, however strong-willed, find it hard to resit pressures created by this advertising. Children are least able to understand the tricks of the advertising industry.
For the hours when children are the main audience, TV advertising of foods must be made to reinforce, not undermine, the message about a balanced diet. We appeal to you, as Prime Minister, to take the lead in calling together the advertisers, TV networks, consumers and public health bodies to decide how this isn to be done.
